Over the past year and a half, Wisconsin Farmers Union has offered a Small Farm Sustainability Stipend for farmers to implement practices that make their farms more sustainable, both financially and environmentally. To date, we’ve been able to help almost 20 farmers progress toward their sustainability goals.

These recipient farms are diverse in their backgrounds, operations, and practices. We have awarded small and medium-sized farms, beginning farms, specialty and diversified crop operations, livestock systems, and more. They have implemented regenerative ideas such as soil health practices, rotational grazing, agroforestry, and prairie / perennial plantings, etc.

This year, we’re excited to expand our programming to facilitate farmer-led, farmer-to-farmer learning – and a new opportunity for our more experienced farmers to lead. We are selecting three farmers to engage their peers and bring them together to learn about regenerative agriculture through events they develop and host.

Details:

  • We are looking for 3 farmer coordinators from the Lake Michigan basin in Wisconsin to each host and plan 2 - 3 events in 2026.

  • Coordinators will each be reimbursed $1,500 for their work planning the events and will have an event budget of $1,500 per coordinator.

  • Selected coordinators will be expected to attend planning meetings in the spring and may receive assistance from Wisconsin Farmers Union and The Nature Conservancy staff.
